September Update

What a successful August for the Friends of Linus Pauling Community Garden! Volunteers helped to promote FLPCG's efforts at the Buckman Neighborhood Association Picnic and the SE Sunday Parkways Event, both held at Colonel Summers Park. Part of volunteers' efforts included obtaining signed postcards (designed by Brett Milligan) asking Mayor Sam Adams for his support of FLPCG. If you haven't already signed the postcard, or if you know of others interested in showing their support, we've included a link below that will direct you to a printable version to be folded, signed, stamped, and mailed to the Mayor's office! Click on the image below to mail a postcard today!

From FLPCG Postcard

For the month of September, Garth has been hard at work contacting various city officials, Portland School Board members, and PPS property management officials, in the continuing effort to gain a new garden for our community. In addition to sending the aforementioned signed postcards to Mayor Sam Adams (at a rate of 8–12 per day, of the approximately 230 signed by interested community members at our last two attended events), Garth has also sent the following letter to Mayor Sam Adams: (click here to open letter in a new browser window).

Another letter has been sent to Steve Cohen (click here to view) of the Portland/Multnomah County Food Policy Council. The letter asks that the council allow us a few minutes of speaking time at next week's meeting, as well as outlines the efforts of FLPCG. The purpose of the letter is to gain the council's support in our efforts with the Mayor's office.

Please take a moment to read both letters, to better understand our efforts and help spread the word! In the meantime, we are in need of several volunteers interested in canvassing the neighborhood of Washington School. Volunteers will have FLPCG brochures on hand to help touch upon many of the talking points we wish to share with the community. Please contact Garth at lpcgarden@gmail.com, if you're interested in these volunteer positions!

Additionally, we were unable to raise many of the funds we'd hoped to raise, with our last two community events. To help raise revenue, we will be accepting donations (in the amount of your choosing) for extra FLPCG t-shirts that we currently have in stock. Of the 14 limited edition shirts, we have the following sizes available: 2 smalls, 4 mediums, 5 larges, and 3 x-larges. If anyone is interested in volunteering for the position of "t-shirt keeper" (soliciting t-shirt requests, gathering monies, and delivering said shirts), again, please contact Garth.

Finally, we are in need of a volunteer interested in acting as "Treasurer" for FLPCG. If this sounds like a position you'd be interested in volunteering for, please let us know!

As always, don't forget to join our Facebook page (click here to be redirected to our Facebook page). Facebook is a great online community where you can see the pictures of the August Col. Summers events, as well as add your comments, ideas, suggestions, and plans of action for FLPCG.

If you'd like to be on our mailing list, please send us an e-mail with the words "Add me to the FLPCG mailing list" in the subject line. Those on the mailing list receive current updates on meetings, events, and volunteer requests. Also, if you'd like to join our official FLPCG Group, click here! The Group page allows members to communicate and coordinate with others, via discussion boards, newsletters, and e-mails.

As always... thank you for your continued support. Be sure to check our Calendar for important upcoming events and meetings.
