October Update: Alternative Site for SE Community Garden

The Friends of Linus Pauling Community Garden met on Thursday, October 14th to discuss a new site for the community garden. We were receiving opposition from PPS as we tried to pursue use of the original site (the PPS-owned, fenced-in area near 14th and Alder at Washington School). We were faced with two options: support from PPS if we chose to instead expand upon the DaVinci school garden, located at NE Everett and 26th; or, support from PP&R if we chose to utilize the PP&R-owned land at the Washington School site.

September Update

What a successful August for the Friends of Linus Pauling Community Garden! Volunteers helped to promote FLPCG's efforts at the Buckman Neighborhood Association Picnic and the SE Sunday Parkways Event, both held at Colonel Summers Park. Part of volunteers' efforts included obtaining signed postcards (designed by Brett Milligan) asking Mayor Sam Adams for his support of FLPCG. SE Sunday Parkways Event

This past Sunday featured another successful event for the Friends of Linus Pauling Community Garden. Between our SE Sunday Parkways event and the Buckman Neighborhood Association picnic the previous Sunday, volunteers for FLPCG were able to get 253 signed postcards from the community—more than half with comments—for Mayor Adams. The cards, a call to arms to the mayor asking for his support of our efforts, are being sent to his office at the rate of approximately one dozen per day. Soon, a letter will also go to his office asking for an interview with some of our Friends.

Buckman Neighborhood Association Picnic

The Buckman Neighborhood Association Picnic was a great success! And, it should be noted that this was the first planned public appearance for the Friends of Linus Pauling Community Garden. Volunteers spent the afternoon in two shifts (Mira and Sandy worked from 4:00PM to 6:00PM and Seth and Mallen worked from 6:00PM to 8:00PM) passing out literature, flyers, and postcards to help inform the public of our group's goals. In total, 81 people signed the postcard expressing their support for FLPCG (to be mailed to Mayor Sam Adams), and over a third of the signers wrote additional comments on the card. Additionally, 19 people signed the list expressing an interest in joining FLPCG's efforts.

The following points might be helpful when talking with individuals whose support you solicit, especially those in the decision-making process for a new community garden.

(1) People Want to Garden. At last count 222 people were on the waiting lists for a community garden plot at Buckman and Colonel Summers Community Gardens. In Portland more than 1000 people are waitlisted for community garden plots. For the nearby Everett community garden, 85 people are waitlisted.

Welcome Friends of the Linus Pauling Community Garden!

Linus Pauling was the 2-time Nobel Prize winner for chemistry is a belated alumnus of Washington High School. The section of Washington High School that sits along Morrison Street, between 12th and 14th Avenues, currently owned by Portland Public Schools (PPS), is the proposed future site for a new community garden within Southeast Portland. But, to create this new garden, we need YOUR help!
